The department is well stocked with some of the most recent and critically acclaimed textbooks. Each room is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and we have a vast library of ICT resources for use in lessons. The department also has access to a class set of iPads.

This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the course. GCSE History students must take assessments in both of the following papers in the same series:
Paper 1: Understanding the modern world (Studied in Year 10)
Paper 2: Shaping the nation (Studied in Year 11)
Both exams are 1 hour 45 minutes in duration and comprise 50% of the final grade each.
The GCSE History content comprises the following elements:
In Year 10
- one period study: 1A America, 1840–1895: Expansion and consolidation
- one thematic study: Conflict and tension, 1918–1939
In Year 11
- one wider world depth study: 2A Britain: Health and the people: c1000 to the present day
- one British depth study including the historic environment: Norman England, c1066–c1100 (2018: Durham Cathedral)
